Finally Finished

I have finally finished "Awake at Dawn" and might I say, I loved it, even with all of the faults. I'm going to do this by character.

Kylie: She's the main character, at the story centers around her and with that comes a multitude of problems. Of course, she doesn't know what she is, and nor do the rest of the other campers. The way she deals with all of her problems, leaves room for improvement. She tends to avoid her problems for as long as she can until she had to absolutely face them, without anywhere to run. Between her problems with Derek and Lucas, and her nothing knowing what she is, and her excessive problems with a rogue vampire; life is a little complicated. She's the kind of character that you want to root for and then she goes and does something slightly stupid, and just makes you want to throttle her a little. From my perspective, she one of the most relate-able characters you could ever read. She's having a hard time finding out who or what she is, her parents are divorced, she has a kind of hate for her father "stepdad", and she's constantly having boy troubles. She has abilities that she doesn't know what to do with; she has growth spurts that make her feel all awkward and weird. Supernatural-ness aside, she's one of the most understandable characters in a series, so far. My props to C.C. Hunter.

Derek: He drives me insane, what can I say. He can be, sometimes intolerably, sweet. Other times, not so much. I think he makes some of the most idiotic decisions in the series. He leaves Kylie, because she has a lust for Lucas, but it wasn't like she would act on it. Back to Derek. He is so frustrating. I just. . . I don't think there are any more words. Maybe in the next book, I'll be able to tolerate more.

Lucas: Oh, what can I say about this amazingly sweet, yet frustrating man. See, Lucas might be frustrating, but he's willing to wait for Kylie, not push her to make decisions, and he's just adorable. I get what he did after he explained why he left, and yeah Fredericka went after him, but he at least explained and made it clear that he still likes Kylie. He was willing, even if it hurt him to some degree a little, to put Kylie's happiness above his own, and honestly be her friend, when she didn't need the "going out" drama. He didn't push her to go out with him. As I recall his exact words were, "I'm patient, Kylie. I've waited elven years for you. I can wait until you're ready." That right there is just. . . I'm going to fangirl (I'm team Lucas, if you didn't already know), so I have to stop. :)

Della: I love her. With her snarky remarks towards rude people, and her undying loyalty to her friends, even if she doesn't always get along with them. Sure, she a vampire and a little moody but what's not to love about her. She looks up to Kylie, and she would defend her no matter what. And even if it had to be coaxed out of her, she apologizes for her mistakes.

Miranda: Gah! I just want to grab her and hug her. Sure, she fucks up now and again (See screwing up with Perry), but she's genuine, and she tries hard.

Holiday: I rather enjoy Holiday, sure there are times when I think she gets out of line, or even a little repetitive about things, but she gets what she's saying and she's always willing to help. She helps Kylie see when she does wrong, and won't admit it. And, she also helps her understand the whole "ghost-thing" that's happening to her. Seeing as Holiday can see them too.

Burnett: At first, I didn't really appreciate or like him. But, after all that he's done for Holiday and Kylie, what's not to love about the guy. Sure, he's a vamp, but not all are bad; Della proves that. He might be rough around the edges, but when something happens he shows genuine concern. You gotta love that. He a big rough teddy bear, even if he doesn't like hugs.

I hope you enjoyed that. I'm starting "Beautiful Creatures" next.
I'm hoping you guys like this. :) Enjoy.

Until next time,
The Book Nerd
